Traslación is a collaboration between Carolina Magis Weinberg (b. Mexico) and Susana Eslava (b.Colombia) that proposes to bring seven women together through the lens of a collective show. Their work, as well as their lives has coincided in the Bay Area in the last couple of years, where all of the artists have come as foreigners and have embodied a state of constant strangeness, that has pushed them to re-recognize their own selves in a new land, through a new language and a new set of relations. Traslación is a stage that exposes their different experiences through visual, sound and performative pieces, that are put into dialogue, reflection and reinterpretation.
Aligned to Ctrl+Shift's commitment to support and celebrate the diversity among the local Bay Area community, Traslación proposes to showcase and support the works of 7 women artists from Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Iceland and Spain. Their interests in reflecting and problematizing over the politics of mobility, authority and language are visible through each of their practices.

Traslación refers to the long movement of a planet around a gravitational force, a circular movement that, in its motion, always implies the return to that same spot.
On May 19, 1977, Jiri Kovanda carried water from the river in his cupped hands and released it a few meters downriver. The water in Kovanda’s hands was temporarily out of its regular course, exited the known path of the river… only to return a few meters later. When it came back, this water was now foreign to the rest of the water, yet still very much alike.
These artists are creating work in the impasse of the outside, all foreign, all in a different language. Like a circulating planet that changes on each rotation, they have entered a state of foreign familiarity. Their process of rendering words into other words and meanings into new denotations has become a practice of depicting visual, sonic and performative translations.
The participating artists share their experience of leaving their countries and passing through the Bay Area at one point of their lives, experiencing a certain otherness that reflects on their work. Some are still here, some have returned to their home places, recognizing themselves as strangers once again.
Traslación will be a space that gathers their iterations, and that proposes to engage in a continuous dynamic of interpretation and dialogue. As part of the show, there will be performances and public events.
