RETURNING TO PROXIMITY
January 19th, 2020
A performance presented at the Berkeley Museum of the Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA) in collaboration with Raphael Villet, Play Press Zines.
The activity was meant to present our collaborative book project, Approximations -+.
Returning to Proximity was an event where closeness was materialized, expanding an idea from a collaborative book between the two artists. The performance gathered Carolina, who came from Mexico City, Raphael, who came from Oakland, as well as the audience, who came from various different locations.
This piece brought measuring as a performance into the space of the museum. Thick black, red, and white paper streamers became the map making tools. Through a series of gestures the space was mapped and the distance between the artists was repeatedly measured.
A center between them was found. And a center vanished.
We measured with our bodies: our feet, our thumbs, our palms, our steps. We measured without taking notes. We measured towards and away a center. We measured again and again and again. We measured the space, we measured ourselves, we measured our measuring tools.
We asked the audience to tell us what they centered. We pulled their centers into our center.
A play on scale. A play on words. A play on actions. A play on certainty. A continuous play on the ways in which space is occupied by a couple of bodies, always returning to proximity.
Our deepest gratitude to Lukaza Branfman-Verissimo for making this happen.
